Scientists unravel mystery behind schizophrenia

Washington (IANS): New research has revealed how schizophrenia, a mental disorder which results in hallucinations, memory loss and social withdrawal, works in the brain.

In a new, genetically engineered mouse model, scientists from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (NUFSM) have discovered that the disease symptoms are triggered by a brain protein necessary for neurons to talk to one another.

In human and mouse brains, kalirin is the brain protein needed to build the dense network of highways, called dendritic spines, which allow information to flow from one neuron to another.

Northwestern scientists have found that without adequate kalirin, the frontal cortex of the brain of a person with schizophrenia only has a few narrow roads.

The information from neurons gets jammed up like rush hour traffic on an interstate highway squeezed into a single lane.

"Without enough pathways, the information takes much longer to travel between neurons and much of it will never arrive," said Peter Penzes, senior study author.

"This discovery opens a new direction for treating the devastating cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia," Mr. Penzes said.

"There is currently no treatment for that. It suggests that if you can stimulate and amplify the activity of the protein kalirin that remains in the brain, perhaps we can help the symptoms," he said.

These findings were published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Al Pacino - not my cup of Cappuccino

Al Pacino! Al Pacino! Al Pacino!

Who has not heard or spoken about him? I too, heard a lot before venturing into watching this guy in action. I must say, I loved the ending dialogues in Devil's Advocate - more for the content than the grasp held by the deliverer, Al Pacino. Honestly, I am not that impressed with this guy.

Watch Scent of a Woman, I agree, he did well. One look at his face and we know he is blind. Appreciated that role. But watch any other movie (from what I watched ;P), say Insomnia, he is pretty much the same. He has the same huskish, hoarsy voice, same way of dialogue-delivery, walk; a frequent 'Aahk' - thats Al Pacino. I am not against him neither am I completely disappointed. He is definitely one better than many around. But, maybe he doesnt deserve the hype he gets!

A school of thought says, hype increases one's expectation leading to disappointment later. I may be one such person to have lived this thought in this guy's example. Similar thing happened when I marketted the latest movie 99 of Kunal Khemu, Boman Irani, Cyrus Broacha, Soha Ali Khan. I went and watched it in Cinemax without any expectation. Came out utterly satisfied for a good choice of watch. But after marketting found it didnt live upto the expectation of its new audience, who had a tinge of adoration even before they saw 9 of 99!

Coming back to Al Pa, my simple anology was this. Watch Amitabh and watch him. People can imitate Amitabh and yet sound hollow. The presence that hits the spectators with Amitabh on
the screen delivering is phenomenal. Al Pa? One can deliver his dialogue and still get away with it. One can imagine some one else there with similar dialogue delivery (possibly with lesser credit). But, one cannot expect same intensity being thrown from the scene if some one else was to deliver Amitabh's dialogues. Look at The Last Lear. Life which Amitabh gave to the words might be even more than what Shakespeare imagined while writing! No doubt, the comparison is a folly on my part, but after the hype, my expectations of this guy were somewhere close to what I would expect from Amitabh. Amitabh is a legend. Surely, Bollywood and for that matter the whole Film Industry owes him for the excellence that he has got acting to.

Undoutedly, Amitabh is one of the finest ever and has just shown how old wine in a new glass is any time better than a budding new wine in an ultramodernized glass. His movies after his come-back are the classics, not the angry-young-man ones. Sure, many will agree with me on this. He shall live as a legend in this world and the world after him.

Al Pa, if you are reading this, you are one of the actors I admire. But you have a long way to prove yourself better than legends from Bollywood :)

Adv of Population explosion!

One advantage of population explosion (for a country like India) is that the number of people in the young group will always be higher than the number of people who are in the old-age group. Thus, we are always progressing! ;D

Umlimited Railway booking counters...

In last two days, we happened to notice two 'privatised' railway/road/air booking counters just outside the hospital. The heading read 'Internet Cafe' followed by booking terminologies below it.

Was just wondering how marketing was a common sense which did not require one to be a MBAite. These were localites (most of them would have struggled to finish their schooling) who got Cyber Cafes with these hoardings. A Super Speciality Hospital demands patients and their relatives to book their return journey dynamically, depending on the outcomes of the tests/procedures/surgeries performed on the patients followed by their progress in their health recovery. There is always a last minute rush for patients and their relatives for train, bus or/and air tickets to get back to their hometowns and work.

Thus, presence of these 'privatised' railway/road/air booking counters is an outcome of the large needs of these patients and their relatives. These headings are sure to attract their attention and earn these people good revenue. All it needs is a free IRCTC login and an SBI account with sufficient funds to manage online payments. Five minutes of activity and tickets are in the hands of these long-distance patients. At the same time, the owners would have pocketed enough for themselves. 2-min walk from hospital, convenience of sitting in A/C, without any travel and hassle is worth giving even an extra 20Rs per transaction.

This shows how unlimited number of railway/road/air booking counters can be opened across the country! If these people take up a post of Railway Agent, it simply adds value to themselves and also the services that they are providing.

These same Cyber Cafes back in town have the follow-up statements of e-mail, chats, etc. Another example of customized customer targetting.

Hi all...

Its been long since I wrote something on this blog. Ofcourse, it has always been the case and as some one said, 'History repeats itself'. To keep up words of that 'some one' I am forced to repeat it, else that 'some one' may feel bad, right? (What concern of me! :))

I guess, we all do lot of editing, re-reading, proof-reading and stuff like that even for a single post on Blog. Ofcourse, its good to do so, but because of these tedious steps and time involvement, many of us tend to take it as a separate task by itself and leave it for 'One fine day...' when I feel like spending time to write something and also have leisure to improve and publish it with satisfaction.

So, to give a little change to myself and that mind-set of lot of thinking-before-writing, re-reading and editing before one publish, I'll try off-hand writing. One which does not require thinking, pooling lot of things, searching for every reference to give a hyperlink on maximum words possible so that people (who are jobless and really interested in what I write) can read up on each and every word and master them ...all thanks to me! ;P

See, even without any stuff around, there has been a post of 4 paras!!! Thanks to English language with over a billion words, throwing words is so easy! :)

My nickname "Rampy"

Pricky (meaning Sathya Prakash of my class) was one of my room-mates in my first year undergraduation in the hostel. One day he spelled out this word 'Rampy' for me. Though I agree, my own name is enough to identify me, there were some who wanted to identify me by the names which they can remember :P Started by Pricky 8 yrs back, now it is the only name (excuse a hyperbole!) by which people know me all over the world :)

Later on, anyone's name having 'prasad' as a trailing suffix got successfully replaced with 'py'. Few examples: Omprasad - Ompy, Guruprasad - G-py, etc.

Thanks to this question at Plinker, learnt a new word called: Moniker. It means the same - nickname

Card holder travels with me

Card holder
All cards get held there, at one shot. Other green notes find a corner enough within this holder to exist or go straight to my open pocket. Apart from these, my specs cleaning cloth, bike-pass, a memstick and maybe a to-do list...
